Is it true that iPhones explode. Can an iPhone explode? And about charging at night

11.07.2020

Probably, before the story of the explosions of smartphones from Samsung, no one would have thought of entering into the search engine a query whether it explodes. However, the situation with Korean phones got such a resonance in the Internet community that for some time it became the main topic of publications in the press, discussions on forums. Moreover, those who have to travel frequently are aware that at almost every airport there are warnings about Samsung detonating phones at check-in counters and please do not bring them on board.

And just in the midst of a heated debate, the Yabloko people released a new model - the long-awaited iPhone 7. We will repeat: security issues with these gadgets have not arisen a priori, since Apple products have always been famous for their high quality. Each new model of this company causes constant excitement, and people stand in line for hours to get the desired novelty.

IPhone 7 was also looking forward to it, and no one asked themselves questions about whether it could explode. In a word, nothing portended trouble. However, while people enthusiastically shared their impressions of the new model, the first publication appeared on the Internet that iPhones could also explode.

First story

The case described on the Web occurred in America. The person who ordered the phone in the online store received it in a damaged form: the display is deformed, there are dents on the case. By the nature of the damage, it could be concluded that, most likely, the battery exploded during transportation. The mind it means that the injured (morally) buyer turned to the manufacturer, received a perfectly functional smartphone, and sent the damaged device for examination.
The news “broke” Internet users who immediately began to analyze photos of the damaged gadget posted on the Web, after which the most attentive doubts about the veracity of this case. In particular, many were embarrassed by the fact that the box into which the device was packed practically did not suffer. Conspirologists immediately concluded that the situation with the explosion of the iPhone was simply simulated seven, and in general all this looks a lot like the machinations of competitors.

Second story

Before the passions in America calmed down, a new troubling message appeared on the Web, this time from China. According to the owner of the new gadget, it exploded during a video shoot: it began to heat up, vibrate, after which the display fell apart, injuring his face and arm. It is clear that he intends to demand material compensation from the manufacturer for moral and physical damage.

The discussion on the Internet flared up with renewed vigor, and again fans of the Apple brand agreed that the situation is ambiguous, because there are great doubts about the authenticity of the model. And again, the participants in the discussion are inclined to believe that a competing company (you know which one) decided to harm successful Yabloko people.

Of course, nothing definite can be said. An investigation is underway.

What's next?

Having rummaged on the Internet, you can find several more stories with chilling details. They write, in particular, about to the iPhone 7 that exploded in the pocket of a Saudi Arabian brought him to a hospital bed with burns. A similar story allegedly happened with a schoolgirl from the US state of Maine, who also received a burn from a smartphone in her jeans pocket.

Does this mean that this model from Apple is completely compromised? Of course not. One thing is clear: a company that values its impeccable reputation must deal with each specific case and give an answer to fans of the brand’s products - this is an unfortunate mistake of the company or, after all, the machinations of unscrupulous competitors.

And quite a bit about the new iPhone

The owners of the new model of the "apple" smartphone received a wonderful gadget that pleases the eye impeccable. The black metal case with onyx sheen harmonizes perfectly with the display. A smartphone in a matte case looks no less respectable (a great gift for those who are annoyed by fingerprints). Naturally, buyers are offered iPhones 7, made in the traditional color scheme (, "").

The technical capabilities of the gadget have been significantly improved: a quad-core processor, an updated camera that allows you to take high-quality pictures - the list of pleasant surprises can be continued.

On the eve of a resident of the People's Republic of China said that his iPhone 7 exploded in his hands right during the video. This is the second message that the smartphones of the American company can be dangerous. But most likely, this is an artificial stir, which should only damage the reputation of Apple, an analyst at Telecom Daily Ilya Shatilin.

The owner of the allegedly exploded smartphone said that he was recording a video and at some point his gadget vibrated, began to heat up and exploded right in his hands. At the same time, fragments of protective glass injured the man's face and finger on his right hand. The Chinese have already contacted Apple support, where he was recommended to contact the company's headquarters in Cupertino USA.

“Information on the suddenly exploding Apple smartphones is largely hype, which rises in the wake of the same problem with Samsung. It’s just that some people intentionally report a fire to the iPhone in order to gain fame or money from the apple corporation. This is such consumer extremism. But with a detailed analysis of photos published on the Internet with injuries to faces and hands, it became clear that if the phone exploded, this did not happen due to manufacturing defects, but because of mechanical damage to the device by the users themselves. Very rarely come out models of mobile devices with defects inherent in production. Nevertheless, no one is safe from this, and the experience of Galaxy Note 7 shows this, ”said Shatilin.

Currently, the owner of the exploded iPhone 7 is going to demand compensation from the manufacturing company for moral and material damage, since he used only the original power adapter when charging the device’s battery. But it would be worth noting that the man did not specify where exactly he purchased the mobile phone - at the official sales office or from hand. Currently, there is an investigation into all the circumstances of the incident.

Some economic experts are sure that reports of exploding iPhones can significantly affect not only Apple's reputation, but also their revenue from the sale of the new gadget.

“Apple will not lose anything from this, because all attempts to create hype around the company are made very ineptly, and it is clear that this is an artificial stir initiated more by competitors than by users or the media. I will not blame the Korean company Samsung for this, but the dog can be buried here. Sorry for the pun. This is quite similar to the Koreans, but again, we have no right to state this, ”the analyst concluded.

Recall, this is the second case of the fire of iPhone 7. So, at the end of last month, a Reddit user said that his iPhone 7 Plus exploded during delivery and broke the packaging. However, Apple did not surpass in such cases its competitors from the Republic of Korea, Samsung. The management of the corporation announced the cessation of production and sale of the Galaxy Note 7. According to analysts, Samsung lost $ 17 billion due to complaints about the device.

At their owners. In the wake of this topic, rumors began to appear that he had not gone far from his "Korean" competitor. Every now and then facts began to emerge testifying to the explosions of the smartphone in the hands of users. Let's see what it is: the reality that has overtaken the "apple users"; maybe the rumors that competitors are spreading to denigrate Apple; or facts of careless handling of the device. Let's figure it out, really?

Just recently, on our resource, we discussed where the “apple” flagship actually went, how news began to appear on the World Wide Web that iPhone 7 exploded. Indeed, in China there was a case of a telephone fire, right in the box. Its owner claims that he was very lucky that he was not injured. He tells the following about what happened: the iPhone was lying in a box and heated up sharply, then smoke started. Frightened, he threw the box right on the floor, which sparks appeared, similar to a firecracker. As a confirmation, the owner posted a photo on the web that shows how badly the iPhone 7 was damaged.

Of course, all this is not absolute information. Moreover, the “apple followers” immediately noticed several discrepancies in the photo. For example, a smartphone for some reason has a pink body and a black frame. All this suggests that it is simply a "duck." If not for one “but” ...

IPhone 7 explodes in China

A little later, another iPhone 7 explosion was registered in Beijing. Moreover, its owner claims that the smartphone exploded while he was shooting a video, that is, in his hands. The result was a wounded hand and face of the user. Of course, with such serious injuries, he decided not to postpone the visit to the official Apple store in the long box and immediately went there to ask for compensation for the damage caused. At the moment, it is also not known whether the case of spontaneous combustion was real, or whether this is another “fake”.

It is believed that it was precisely the great attention to this large-scale problem that caused news that the iPhone 7 was exploding. After all, after a large percentage of users decided to switch to the apple "seven". But for the Korean you can’t imagine a stronger blow. After all, the feuds between Apple and Samsung for winning a larger market share have been going on for several years ...

The first iPhone 6 Plus explosion occurred while charging in Hong Kong. There are no injuries.

The incident happened on Sunday night and frightened a resident of the city a lot. According to the woman, as usual, she put her iPhone 6 Plus 128 GB to charge before bedtime. Leaving the device on a bedside table at around one in the morning, closer to morning she woke up from a deafening clap. The clock was already 8 in the morning.

As a result of ignition of the battery, the smartphone in an instant turned into a charred piece of plastic. According to the owner of the device, they were used the original Apple charger and cable. Although the victim herself admitted that she plugged in the charger from the iPad, and not from the iPhone. Instructions on the company website do not prohibit use the power supply from the tablet to recharge the smartphone, because the woman intends to seek compensation from the California IT giant.

Current in 2.5 amperes could be the reason for this, because the smartphone is powered by just 1 ampere. However, the representative of Gonkogsky Polytechnic University put forward his version of what happened:
Most likely, there was a malfunction in certain smartphone systems, which were supposed to disconnect the battery from the power in time. As a result, the iPhone battery simply overheated for an almost full night of charging. And there was an explosion.

While this is unique to Hong Kong, Apple's smartphones explode with horrendous regularity. So, the iPhone exploded in a schoolgirl’s pocket, ignited right during a telephone conversation, and I don’t even want to remember about problems with the excessive flexibility of the latest generation of devices from Apple.

For all explosion hazard Apple technology, there are also cases when a smartphone saved a life. And with special desire, all of five unnecessary devices, you can make a bulletproof plate for a full body armor.

Well started. One of the owners of the new iPhone 7 from Apple announced the explosion of the smartphone in the factory packaging. In the photos published on the Reddit website by the user under the nickname kroopthesnoop, it is clear that the smartphone was torn to pieces. The packaging in which the device was located is also damaged.

So why do phones explode?

By and large, the only thing that is dangerous in a phone or smartphone is its battery. All known accidents were somehow related to the battery - during charging or simply during operation of the device.

Here are just some of the cases reported in the media:

3. As a result of the fall, the phone’s battery was exhausted and the owner turned it on for charging, but the battery stubbornly did not want to charge. After turning off the charger, the phone’s battery suddenly began to heat up and swell, and after that the device exploded. As a result of the explosion, the woman was not injured.

4. In July 2013, Kimmo Piilola replaced the battery of his Samsung brand phone. He did this at the manufacturer’s authorized service center in Porvoo. That same evening, his new battery exploded - so much so that it burned the wooden floor onto which the phone fell. “The room filled with smoke in a few minutes,” says Kimmo Piilola.

5. iPhone 6 bent and caught fire in your pocket

This is not to say that one or another smartphone manufacturer is “explosive”. Yes, there have been cases when the vendor had to recall a batch of devices due to possible problems, but, by and large, the battery of any, even the most expensive smartphone can explode.

It would seem that the technology of battery production has been tested and tested over the years, however, no revolutionary breakthroughs in technology have occurred lately. Basically, manufacturers try to make the battery as small as possible with the largest possible capacity.

On the one hand, this approach benefits the consumer, but on the other hand, it increases the risk of battery failure when something goes wrong - in case of violation of operating conditions.

In modern smartphones, manufacturers use lithium batteries (Li-ion or Li-pol). And any such battery has a fire potential. Lithium is used as an anode in rechargeable batteries because it has an extremely high electrochemical potential.

Typically, batteries light up due to a short circuit inside. There is a separator that separates the positive and negative electrodes. If a break occurs in this layer and the electrodes are in contact, the battery begins to heat up quickly.

This, in turn, leads to ignition of the electrolyte. And as soon as one of the cells lights up, the next ones flash after it. Such a process is called “thermal acceleration (runaway)”, and it is this that causes the majority of “explosions” of batteries or, if you're lucky, just a sharp “swelling” of the battery.

While lithium is most effective for the production of high-capacity batteries, these same properties give it high reactivity and a high tendency to manifest a “thermal runaway” effect. Lithium is an alkali metal, along with sodium, potassium, and the rest of the first group of the periodic table. These elements are not only flammable, but are also so reactive that adding a few grams of a substance to a container of water can lead to an explosion. Therefore, when a lithium-ion battery begins to overheat, the lithium present in it can accelerate the decay of other cells.

How to avoid an explosion

We found that the main cause of fire is damage to the separator (separator).

This can happen, for example, after a strong blow of the gadget or because of its heating. It must be remembered that the normal battery operating conditions are up to 50-60 degrees Celsius.

So, it is not necessary:

Try to bend the smartphone;
- throw it on the wall;
- soak in water (so as not to short-circuit the contacts);
- forget on a sunny day under the windshield of a car or near an open flame.

In addition, it is important to use original batteries. Many manufacturers give the opportunity to change the battery on their own, and people use it economically, buying not original batteries, but much cheaper noname-analogues.

Savings in this case may be doubtful - it happened that the batteries caused not only burns, but also serious fires. After all, if a large manufacturer seriously monitors the quality of their products (trying to avoid loss of reputation and legal costs), then a small Chinese workshop does not think about this.

In addition to the original batteries, it is advisable to use original chargers. Moreover, now there are only a few popular connectors on the market - microUSB and USB Type-C (for Android and WP-gadgets), as well as lightning and the old wide connector for iPhone / iPad. Therefore, there should be no problems with buying a normal “brand” charge.

By the way, it happened that non-original chargers led not only to a fire, but also to electric shock. So you need to pay no less close attention to this component than to original batteries.

And about charging at night

Most stories related to the fire of batteries begin with the fact that a person “left the phone on charge for the night and woke up from the smell of smoke”. But this does not mean at all that a long time the phone is on charge will certainly lead to an explosion.

The fact is that all modern high-quality lithium-ion batteries are equipped with a built-in electronic circuit that prevents overcharging and overheating due to too intense a charge.

Therefore, if you discard a possible marriage, then when using the original charger and the same battery, it does not matter how long the smartphone is in the socket - 2 hours or all night.
