There is another effective and well-studied relaxation technique in which you alternately tense and relax your muscles in order to learn to recognize muscle tension and relax at will. This technique - progressive relaxation - was developed by Dr. Edmund Jacobson when he noticed that the muscles of his bedridden patients were still tense, although the patients themselves looked quite serene. Their muscle tension (clamping), according to Jacobson, was the result of nerve impulses sent to the muscles, which ceased upon recovery. Progressive relaxation is sometimes called neuromuscular relaxation. This procedure includes a specific sequence of exercises that help people reduce the degree of unnecessary muscle tension.

It was a pleasant spring day - the sun was shining, a light breeze was blowing, the air temperature was about 20 degrees. It was one of those days when I should have played tennis, jogged, or taught my son to ride a bike (very tedious, but still necessary). Instead, I was squatting on the side of a road in upstate New York and throwing up. The story of how on such a glorious day I ended up in such an inglorious position can serve as a good lesson for many. At the time, I was an assistant professor at New York State University at Buffalo and acted out my omniscience on unsuspecting and innocent students. I have been successful in each of the three areas of university activity - teaching, research and publishing, and university and public services, which is a criterion for professional success, competence and authority. The attitude of students towards my classes was very flattering.
I accumulated fifteen publications in professional journals and signed a contract for my first book. It was enough for the teacher and for the development of the do-or-die syndrome. I had to work for public opinion and meet its criteria. I was invited to give presentations to public groups. I soon discovered that I was able to inspire audiences with my speeches and workshops on various topics that somehow fell within my area of expertise - health education programs. I spoke at a local Kivanis Club with a report on the topic “Techniques for the Prevention and Treatment of Drug Addiction”, as well as in the cooperative kindergarten “Green Spaces” with a lecture for parents and educators on the topic “Prevention of drug addiction in young children”. I have taught classes at MeDal College High School on Sexuality Education, as well as seminars at various schools in the district on topics such as Why Healthy Life Knowledge is Necessary?, Values and Learning, Group Process. and "Smoking Prevention Training Program".
It all began to take shape, and from local Presentations I moved on to regional and national seminars, presenting my work in various states and at national meetings. My life changed quickly and often. I went to Buffalo as an assistant professor and moved up two notches there, returning as a professor in charge of the health education program. When I left Buffalo, I had over forty publications in professional journals, and my second book was already in the pipeline. I bought my first house in Buffalo, had two children, and won my first tennis match there. In short, I was successful in Buffalo. So why did I vomit? The point was that I had gone through too many changes in too short a period of time. I've often wondered if I'm as good as everyone else, or if I'm just lucky.
