The art of keeping up: drive time from Gleb Arkhangelsky. Gleb Arkhangelsky - Time Drive. How to keep up with living and working Time drive for children examples

21.07.2020

To be honest, I really dislike such books. All of us, picking up something self-help, hope that our life will be better. That we will find the key, and we will get what did not work. And in 99 percent of cases it turns out that this is not true.

I have read a lot of books about time management. For the simple reason that I study and work a lot, I have a whole bunch of hobbies, and I want to work and learn effectively, while doing well in the joys of life and not being like a driven horse. Honestly, none of them worked. Either the book didn't suit me personally, or it just didn't work. Many ideas caused rejection, irritation, hatred (yes, and such). I wanted to feel comfortable and not be under constant stress from redesigning myself.

The idea of flylady more or less clarified in its time, but it is more sharpened for housewives with children. Of course, flyleading universal systems can be applied anywhere, including at work and in school, but it was there that they did not take root. There are no children and it is not planned, the dwelling is small, the two of us eat a little, so the question "how to do everything around the house" is not worth it. And therefore we must look for something else.

To say that ideas are not new is to say nothing. It seems to me that taking into account the experience of the past years, the perfect technologies of schedulers, reminders, various services, it is simply unrealistic to come up with something new. But this very simple, laconic and kind book opened my eyes. I can't say exactly how it happened :)

And what hooked me the most. We strive for material benefits, a high position at work. Nobody denies the importance of money. As Robert Kiyosaki said, only those who have never experienced a shortage of money talk about the unimportance of money. But Gleb offers the following test. What would we write on our tombstone?

"Sasha Ivanova, promoted five sites to the top of Yandex ..."
No, something is not right.
"Sasha Ivanova, dropped fifteen kilograms ..."
Stop!
"Sasha Ivanova, I collected for an apartment ..."
STOP, I said!

What do I really want to achieve in life? Reach a high level of performance in academic vocals, perform? Yes. Finish your book and print it? Yes.

I don't deny the importance of weight loss or SEO. Not. But what is important for me, that in the first place I have - this is the starting point.

Didn't I know about this? Yes, of course I knew. But damn it, why is it all linked to time management just now? And the devil only knows. Why am I just now experiencing such emotions? Probably the author is very calculating :)

Anyway, there are changes now and today. And I feel comfortable and light. I didn't even hope that this is possible from the self-help book. But I accept surprises with gratitude. So that.

The book that saves time is the book of life!

Surprisingly, everyone will make good money on this wonderful book.

The author, Gleb, will start working. Not so much money as fame and popularity - and many new grateful students. The publishing house will earn - and again, not so much money as many grateful readers. And finally, every reader will work. And - unlike Gleb and the publishing house - three times. At first he will earn a lot of positive emotions - after all, the book is written very easily, accessible and interesting! Then, with some effort on himself, he will start earning "time points" - first hours, then days and weeks of his time. And then the most valuable "earnings" will come, which bring a lot. These are changes for the better - both in personal life and in career. You will really start to manage to live and work!

One of the readers once told me that my prefaces to books remind him of good Georgian toasts - they are rather long and interesting. Understood the hint, round off.

Well ... for a time drive!

Foreword: our capital of time

Dear reader, we are all on an equal footing in the face of the inexorable passage of time. Whatever material well-being we have achieved, each of us has very little time. There are no millionaires in the realm of time. The available capital of the time remaining until the end of life is approximately 200-400 thousand hours. And most importantly, time is irreplaceable. Lost time, unlike lost money, cannot be returned.

"The art of keeping up", time management, time management is one of the most essential arts for a modern person. More and more diverse information. Events are happening faster and faster. It is necessary to react in time, to keep within ever more stringent deadlines. At the same time, somehow find time for relaxation, hobbies, family, friends ...

Five years ago, when we were creating the Time Management Community, the topic of time management was little known in Russia. It was believed that in the conditions of the “broad Russian soul” and the Russian “off-road and slovenliness” it was impossible to plan time. Few people knew that as early as 1926 there was a Vremya league that disseminated advanced time management technologies; few people were familiar with the rich history of domestic time management. The experience of members of the TM community and corporate TM projects has shown that planning time in Russia is necessary and possible. You will find real examples of this in the book.

Time management is not only about diaries, plans and deadlines. It is a technology that allows you to use the irreplaceable time in your life in accordance with your goals and values.Whether you use flexible or rigid planning, timing or self-motivation, Outlook or a paper notebook, it makes no difference. The technique is secondary. It is important to find your own, "family", life goals - and allocate your time in accordance with them. Waste life's irreplaceable time on what really is want.

Three years ago, the publishing house "Peter" published my monograph "Time Management: From Personal Efficiency to Firm Development", which has now gone through two editions. It was the first non-translated book on time management in Russia over the past 30 years, summarizing my author's developments and the experience of members of the TM community. Numerous responses led me to write a second book in a more popular format.

The first book was a "maximum program" containing all the wealth of classical and modern TM-tools, setting the foundations and boundaries of time management as a new discipline in management science. The book you are holding in your hands is a "minimum program". Here, in the simplest possible form, the most necessary and widely used personal time management techniques are outlined. As in the first book - always on real Russian examples.

The unusual title of the second book was not chosen by chance. "Time" is the energetic, technological, effective "time" of the Western world, well mastered in the Russian language. "Drive" is a root that has also taken root in the Russian language, associated with two things: management, energetic movement - and, the second meaning, a vivid pleasure in what you are doing. As the Russian language learned these two roots, so we all, in my opinion, should learn an energetic, active, purposeful approach to our time. Let's add this energetic approach, this "time drive", to our traditionally strong trait - the ability to dream, create, set high goals. And then we will have no equal.

Introduction

XXI century. makes new demands on each of us, whoever we are: managers and specialists, leaders, students, schoolchildren or owners of our own enterprises. The economic situation is changing rapidly, the amount of information we receive is growing day by day, competition is intensifying, including in the labor market. In these conditions, the management of such an intangible and irreplaceable resource as time becomes extremely important. Time becomes more important than money.

In the new economy, where the life cycles of goods are calculated in months and weeks, the ability to respond quickly and flexibly to any unforeseen situation comes to the fore. Constant changes in activities - the introduction of new management systems, entering new markets, developing and launching new products on the market - are becoming the norm in the activities of companies and organizations. The changes entail an increase in the volume of tasks performed by managers and specialists, give rise to the need to find reserves of time for the implementation of innovative projects.

The growing pace of change requires modern specialists to make more independent decisions, the ability to independently organize and plan their work. The ever-increasing external requests to the employee require him to be able to independently (without referring to the manager) prioritize in conditions of limited time resources.

Therefore, one of the fundamental competences of a modern professional has recently become the ability to effectively organize time at any level - personal, team, corporate, as well as the ability to coordinate their actions with those of others to accomplish assigned tasks.

You can learn how to use the resource of time rationally, act effectively and achieve success by learning how to properly plan your activities, manage your tasks and affairs (both long-term and short-term), set priorities, set goals and achieve them, distribute your workload, finding time for both work and leisure. And the sooner we manage to master the skill of effectively managing our time, the faster and easier our path to the heights of excellence and success will be. After all, a person is given less than 20 years to build his career and reach the desired level. And it is important to manage this time wisely, not to lose precious and irreplaceable hours and minutes on the way to your goal.

We give you the opportunity to learn and start putting into practice time management techniques that will make your progress to the heights of success not only quick, but also enjoyable.

The history of the formation of time management in Russia

Time management is often perceived as a purely Western technology. However, the domestic school of the scientific organization of labor and personal time has a number of its own achievements that have no analogues in Western science. Moreover, many of the developments of domestic researchers of the organization of time were borrowed by Western experts. Three main stages can be distinguished in the history of the development of domestic time management.

First step falls on the 20s. XX century. - a period of rapid development of the economy and scientific organization of labor (STO). This is a time of labor enthusiasm, slogans and appeals, and at the same time, a period of very competent and effective economic management, management of the country's economy. The origin and development of time management at this stage was associated with names A.K. Gasteva and P.M. Kerzhentseva, whose ideas and experiences were especially important for the further study and development of time management.

Alexey Kapitonovich Gastev, director of the Central Labor Institute (CIT), was personally acquainted and was in correspondence with Henry Ford. Knowing the ideas of Ford and Frederick Taylor, he disagreed with them in many ways. Unlike Taylor, who focused on the system and organization, and Ford, who improved production techniques, Gastev focused on the human factor. He believed that it is the person who plays the main role in the activities of the enterprise. Therefore, the consideration of organizational effectiveness in general begins with Gastev with personal the effectiveness of the individual in his workplace. Some of his developments allowed one of the "fathers" of scientific management, F. Gilbreth, after reading the publications of CIT, to declare: "The Russians are deeper than we are in NOT."

On July 18, 1923, the Pravda newspaper published an article entitled "Time is building airplanes", which began like this:

“At one congress of the Soviets, I sat next to an American journalist. The meeting, scheduled at 11 o'clock, had not yet begun until one o'clock, as is often the case with us. The journalist asked me:

- How many people are in the hall?

- Thousands three and a half.

- Are there many locksmiths, turners, modelers among them?

- Yes, probably, workers of various specialties predominate in the hall.

Then my American, scribbling something in a little book, said:

- Today we lost 7 thousand working hours waiting for the meeting to begin. With such an expenditure of labor, one or even two airplanes could be built.

We still waited "from half an airplane," and only then the meeting began.

Indeed, it is time for us to express our infinite delays in some real quantities, for example, in the airplanes of our air fleet. Then we are more likely to realize the economic disastrousness of our laxity. Then we will learn to value time and work with precision. "

This article caused a wide response and became a catalyst for the social movement of the struggle for time, which resulted in the creation of the League "Time". Its leader and author of the article was Platon Mikhailovich Kerzhentsev... In that amazing period in Russian history, without any government intervention, people organized the cells of the Vremya League, wrote articles, “infected” those around them with the idea of a reasonable attitude to time. In almost all newspapers, the sections "Struggle for Time" soon appeared. At the same time, the League presented rather stringent requirements to its members, thanks to which they did not just called on to the organization of time, but also presented what they called for. Unfortunately, the Vremya League, like most organizations associated with the scientific organization of labor, was closed in parallel with the curtailment of the NEP (New Economic Policy). But the experience of the League has shown that it is possible to set the task of fighting for time on the scale of society and the state.

Foreword - Our Capital of Time

Dear reader,

we are all equal in the face of the inexorable passage of time. Our unique abilities, professional competence, desire to achieve more often face a chronic lack of it. This is the only resource that is lacking for everyone, regardless of age, psychological type, social and financial status.

Each of us has very little time. There are no millionaires in the realm of time. The available capital of the time remaining until the end of life is approximately 200-400 thousand hours. And most importantly, time is irreplaceable. Lost time, unlike lost money, cannot be returned.

Chapter 1. Rest: how not to turn into a "driven horse"

On Friday most of the time you want to drink.
On Monday, most often you want Friday.
Anecdote.ru

We will start our conversation about time management in an unusual way - with the organization of rest.

Remember, dear reader: have you ever felt tired and exhausted at work, having lost all taste even for your favorite work? If yes, you are not alone. This is a common problem in our time. In Japanese, she even gave birth to a special word "karoshi" - "death from overwork at work."

In competent personal time management, not only the amount of time is important, but also the quality. Therefore, it is worth thinking about how your vacation is organized, the restoration of your energy resource.

Rhythmic rest during the working day

Try to recall: how were your rest breaks distributed during yesterday's work day?

Most likely, the rest took shape “spontaneously”. Distracted for a few minutes by an interesting discussion on the Internet; an acquaintance called - chatted with him; went out to smoke; closed his eyes and dreamed; drank a cup of coffee.

This "spontaneous" rest has a number of disadvantages. First of all, he is not rhythmic, but man is a biological creature accustomed to different rhythms. Therefore, the first principle that I recommend to adhere to when organizing rest during the working day is rhythm... Simply put: use a small planned rest at strictly defined intervals.

As a rule, the optimal regimen is about 5 minutes of rest every hour. Maybe 10 minutes in 1.5 hours. Duration from an hour to one and a half is the most comfortable interval of continuous work for a person. Remember school and university: lesson - 45 minutes, "couple" - 1.5 hours.

No matter how busy your working day is, no matter what "rush" reigns in the office - still allocate these 5 minutes per hour. Invest time in these five minutes of rest, work without them is extremely ineffective.

In the MC-Bauchemie-Russia Group of Companiestime management seminars were held in the evenings. At one of the seminars, the following dialogue took place among the participants:

“It's strange, for some reason, English classes are also held in the evenings, at the same time, but we get tired of them much more. - Naturally, in time management in the middle of the lesson, we definitely take a break for 15 minutes. And in English we work all 4 hours in a row without interruption. "

"Maximum switching" at rest

You need to rest rhythmically during the day, five minutes per hour. But how exactly do you rest during the working day, how do you fill these five minutes, what holiday scenarios using? Each of us usually has several such typical scenarios. For example:

 • Call a friend
 • I'll go out for a smoke
 • I'll see something interesting on the Internet
 • Watering flowers
 • I'll have a cup of tea.

Let's try to assess the degree of "switching" that different scenarios give on a five-point scale. For example:

1 point. Staying at the same workplace, in the same position (sitting), looking at the same computer, straining the same intellect - to read something “out of order” on the Internet.

2 points. Staying at the same workplace, turning away from the computer, talk to a colleague about non-work topics.

3 points. Go to the "smoking room" and discuss work and non-work issues there; have tea with colleagues. We have changed the location, perhaps - changed the themes with which our brain is "puzzled".

4 points. Leave the office on the street, admire the blue sky and green trees, completely disconnect from the "office" environment.

5 points. Go outside, do a few simple exercises that allow you to "stretch" your joints, give rest to your eyes tired from the monitor, completely forget about all your work problems.

The stronger the switch during the five-minute rest, the better you will rest and recuperate.... Be sure to leave the workplace, take a "physical culture break". If there is no way to go outside, walk along the corridor. If you worked with people, be alone; if you analyzed numbers - call a good friend and discuss something emotionally pleasant. I also recommend doing some simple physical exercises: bends, squats, etc. It will perfectly restore your strength and energy to work!

The famous Soviet poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, who knew well and supported the movement of the scientific organization of labor, expressed the principle of maximum switching in a simple slogan:

Comrade, remember the simple rule
You work while sitting
Rest - standing!

Creative laziness

Speaking of rest, it is impossible to ignore the topic of laziness. Laziness is not always a bad thing. This is often a normal defense reaction of our body. Its reasons may be:

 • Overwork, objective "exhaustion" of the body, waste of physical, energy and emotional resources;
 • The discrepancy between our “must” and our “want” - when we spend the time of our life on things that are not “native” or desirable for us;
 • An intuitive feeling that the task at hand is unnecessary.

A fourth reason is also possible. Your subconscious mind gives you a signal: "Wait, don't fuss, cleanse your soul of small current thoughts, give a place for the birth of something new." It is often in this state that the best ideas and creative insights come in.

The "rules for creative laziness" are simple:

 • If you are really lazy, then "100%", without trying to do something else at this time, think, solve problems, etc. Pure laziness is a pure sense of the fullness of being and the universal harmony of the universe.
 • Consciously make the decision “I want to be lazy - and I will do it”. Without hesitation and remorse.
 • Before "creative laziness" load the brain with information on an important creative problem for you. But don't think about the problem during laziness itself!

If you follow these rules, "creative laziness" will become an inexhaustible source of beautiful ideas and solutions. And also - wonderful rest and recuperation.

Effective sleep

"I rarely get enough sleep!" - Participants of time management seminars often complain. Sleep is the most important way to rest and recuperate. But do we always organize it competently? Even without increasing the amount of time for sleep, you can significantly improve its quality.

Sleep efficiency is greatly enhanced by consistent bedtime and wake-up times. Your body gets used to a certain time, it becomes easier to fall asleep and wake up. It is also advisable to ventilate the room well and not eat for several hours before bedtime.

I recommend finding and using the best way to "switch" to sleep mode for you. For example, in the last half hour or hour before bedtime - quiet reading, a walk, music, light gymnastic exercises, etc. The activity can be anything you like, the main thing is that it helps you unload your brain from daily worries, switch to a slower rhythm.

The duration of sleep can be different, it is important to determine the optimal one for yourself. How to do it?

Our sleep consists of several cycles of alternating "fast" and "slow" sleep. The duration of one cycle differs from person to person and ranges from 1 to 2 hours. It is desirable that the total sleep duration be a multiple of the length of one cycle. For example, if the cycle length is 1 hour 30 minutes, then it is better to sleep for 7 hours 30 minutes (multiple of the cycle length) than 8 hours. When the length of sleep is a multiple of the cycle length, a person wakes up with a feeling of vigor, freshness and well-restored strength. Watch yourself, try varying the length of your sleep, and you will soon determine which sleep length is optimal for you.

Marshal Vasilevsky shares his experience in planning a sleep regimen. “… In especially tense days, Stalin repeatedly told the responsible employees of the General Staff that we must find at least five or six hours of rest for ourselves and for our subordinates a day, otherwise, he stressed, fruitful work could not work. In the October days of the battle for Moscow, Stalin himself set a rest for me from 4 to 10 in the morning and checked whether this was his demand. The incidents of violation generated extremely serious and highly unpleasant conversations for me. The most intense work, and sometimes the inability to organize their time, the desire to take on many responsibilities, often forced responsible workers to forget about sleep. And this, too, could not but affect their performance, and therefore, in practice.

Sometimes, returning from Stalin at about four o'clock in the morning, in order to implement the decisions taken at Headquarters, I had to give the executors or the fronts the necessary instructions. Sometimes it took far more than four hours. I had to go for a trick. I left the adjutant of senior lieutenant A.I. Grinenko at the Kremlin telephone at the desk. When Stalin called, he had to report that I was resting until ten. As a rule, the answer was "Good". ... "

(A.M. Vasilevsky "The work of all life", book 1, Moscow, IPL, 1988)

It is important to organize not only the sleep process, but also the awakening process. I advise you to set several different melodies in your alarm clock or mobile phone, and with their help make the process of waking up gradually. For example, you need to wake up at 8.00. Let the first melody play at 7.30, pleasant and calm, on which you wake up, be glad that you do not need to get up yet, and fall asleep again. At 7.45 - something more cheerful, perhaps already with words to which the brain reacts more actively than to a melody without words. And at 8.00 - the most joyful and energetic melody on which you finally wake up, get out of bed and gladly meet the new day of your life.

Sleep use during the working day

Have you, reader, had to nod in the afternoon trying to concentrate on an important task? What to do when you feel sleepy at work?

Look at the "average" chart of a person's daily biorhythms. It is believed that our capacity for work and activity during the day has two recessions and two rises (for "larks" the first rise is higher, for "owls" - the second, falling in the evening). It is easy to see that one of the recessions occurs just in the afternoon.

The simplest solution to the problem is daytime sleep, covering the afternoon biorhythm decline. Let's remember the famous Latin American "siesta", the obligatory nap in the afternoon heat. Let us also remember British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who lived to be 90 years old, despite an unhealthy lifestyle and a huge burden of worries and responsibilities. His assistants had the right to interrupt his obligatory daytime sleep for no less than the beginning of the war. Daytime sleep was also an indispensable element of the routine of the Russian Boyar Duma before Peter I.

An example of the corporate organization of daytime sleep was given by a participant in a corporate seminar at Sibirtelecom OJSC, Novosibirsk. “In China, in the city of Shenzhen, we were taken on an excursion to a telecommunications equipment plant. At the equipment testing tables, we noticed strange devices. It turned out to be folding folding bunks embedded in tables. Lunch for workers lasts two hours, of which an hour is officially allocated for sleep. "

What if you do not yet have your own office with a comfortable leather sofa, and you cannot afford a full day's sleep?

Alternatives are possible. The simplest is a small afternoon nap in the car, if you have one. Take 20-30 minutes for this, it will pay off with much higher afternoon productivity.

You can fall asleep for a short while right at the workplace, or somewhere else - in the meeting room, on an armchair in the far corner, etc. To disconnect from external interference, you can wear headphones with your favorite music. The duration of such a "micro-sleep" is determined for yourself, how optimal is the right one - 10-15 minutes. One plant manager would set the alarm clock for 15 minutes and fall asleep in his office chair. He explained his method as follows: "a long sleep knocks out of the working rut, and in 15 minutes the brain refreshes well, but does not have time to fall asleep too much."

A member of the TM-community Sergey Kozlovsky, CEO of the software company Nilitis, Minsk. “In 1997, I jumped several career rungs and became chairman of the board of directors of several small but rapidly growing firms. The loads were incredible. A person can withstand this normally only if he divides his calendar day into several, that is, he sleeps several times during the day, in small "portions".

I learned to sleep at work with my head on the table. I didn't have any office then. Another 3 to 14 people worked in this room. But if you plug your ears with paper dipped in water, then the noise does not interfere. 20 minutes of sleep - and you can continue to work. And so, somehow my boss calls from across the ocean. And asks: "Do you sleep during working hours?" "I am sleeping" - I answer. And we both understand that this is not from a quiet life. “Don't - he advises. - Find another way to relax. Coffee, lunchtime walks ... "
Coffee, walks - no, it's not mine. Not the effect. Then I rented a room next to work and started sleeping legally. It was inexpensive. "

"Experiencing the moment"

“The disciple, having come to the mentor, left an umbrella and shoes at the entrance. The teacher asked him if he put an umbrella to the left or to the right of the shoes. The disciple could not remember and was ashamed: having lost his vigilance, he missed the moment. "
Zen parable

In conclusion of the theme of rest, it is necessary to dwell on such an important aspect of the relationship between a person and time as a pure “experience of the moment”. At the end of the 20th century, time management specialist Stefan Rechtshafen drew attention to the perniciousness and dangers of "running after time," the constant haste in which most people live in industrialized countries.

I must warn you: in the early stages of using time management, there may be some "anxiety syndrome" about time, sometimes even "trivialities." It's okay, it goes away quickly. But something else remains. When you manage time, feel it as a resource subject to you, it is much easier for you to allocate it to spontaneity, "thoughtless" pastime, "creative laziness", contemplation of the harmony of the universe, and other highly worthy pursuits that have no immediate material purpose. When planning time, it is important to remember that the “fullness”, “saturation” of time, its “quality” is no less important than its purely arithmetic quantity. “Plan” and “experiencing the moment” should not contradict, but support each other.

I really love sunsets. And during working hours, if possible, and during vacation - necessarily, I allocate time to contemplate the sunset. Like it or not, this process needs to be planned. After all, I know that my favorite sunset stage at this time of the year in this place begins, for example, at 21.15, and lasts no more than 25-30 minutes.

Does this planning interfere with the purity of contemplation, unburdened by thoughts, worries, and other hindrances? No way. On the contrary, it is only through planning that I can allocate the required amount of time for the sunset, despite the workload, and most importantly, during contemplation, disconnect from all extraneous thoughts and worries, knowing that other tasks and problems are under control.

The ancient ascetic fathers, who left us a rich legacy of methods of self-improvement, had, among others, the following formulation of monastic activity: "Attention to oneself and mortal memory." These two principles were considered fundamental for the purification of the soul and the attainment of spiritual heights.

There is an analogy to these principles in time management. “Mortal memory” is an awareness of the limitations of human life and its temporary resource, requiring not to waste precious time of life on trifles. And "attention to yourself", awareness and meaningfulness of life, constant tracking and analysis of their actions. These help to develop that heightened sense of fullness of the moment, which makes life bright and beautiful, and not a series of gray boring everyday life.

Sergey Karelov, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Silicon Information Technologies, at the First TM Conference in May 2003, quoted Rick Fields:

“As soon as we consciously pay attention to what we are doing - cooking, cleaning or love - how this action is transformed and becomes part of the movement of our soul. And we suddenly begin to notice such strokes and details that were unknown to us before; our sense of everyday life becomes clearer, sharper and, at the same time, much more versatile. "
